Harrow Green was appointed to manage the relocation of approximately 15 laboratory areas and associated storage rooms for Upperton Pharma Solutions. The move supported the organisation’s transition from Nottingham Science Park to a new bespoke facility in Beeston, designed to provide increased space and enhanced operational capacity.
The relocation impacted around 60 staff members and focused exclusively on the transfer of laboratory equipment. Planning began two years ahead of the move, which wad delivered across eight carefully scheduled move days.
The Challenges
The primary challenge was restricted access at the origin site. Laboratory corridors were narrow, lift access was limited to small cars unsuitable for palletised equipment, and several doorways featured awkward structural columns that created tight clearance points. In addition, rear access required routing equipment through a garden area, further complicating logistics.
The move schedule itself was fragmented due to the client’s operational workloads and regulatory site approvals, which progressed slower than anticipated. This required flexibility in booking and delivering move days at short notice, while ensuring minimal disruption to laboratory operations.
The Solution
A detailed pre-move assessment was conducted to fully understand spatial constraints and access limitations. Working closely with the client’s existing asset inventory, our team advised on the specific information required to plan safe handling and sequencing.
To overcome access restrictions, lifting equipment and packing methodologies were carefully selected and adapted to suit confined routes. Equipment movements were planned with precision to navigate narrow corridors and structural pinch points without incident. Close coordination between our Life Sciences Project Manager and the Birmingham depot team ensured resources could be mobilised quickly as new move dates were confirmed.
Two OEMs were engaged where required, and scheduling was aligned to maintain compliance with site and certification requirements. Throughout the programme, clear communication and a collaborative approach underpinned successful delivery.
Highlights
The relocation was completed safely, on time, and fully within scope across eight move days, with no disruption to daily laboratory operations. All laboratory equipment was transferred securely to the new Beeston facility, supporting Upperton Pharma Solutions’ expansion into a larger, purpose-built environment.
Client feedback highlighted appreciation for our attention to detail, flexibility, and fair-minded management of the account. Strong communication and mutual trust were key to the project’s success – and, notably, despite challenging access constraints, not a single item encountered obstruction during transit.
This project further demonstrates Harrow Green’s expertise in managing complex laboratory relocations, even within highly constrained environments.
